چکیده

Contemporary factories in capital intensive industries such as semiconductor manufacturing are very complex, with many sources of risk. The highly competitive and global business environment forces companies to analyze, design, and continuously re-design factories with distributed multidisciplinary teams. Traditional factory design approaches using spreadsheets and stand-alone simulations cannot adequately cope with the resulting time, cost, and risk requirements. In this paper, we address the opportunity to support fab design teams by providing on-demand simulation. The method for achieving this combines formal fab descriptive models with a process for generating fab analysis models from relatively standard sources of fab data.

Universität Würzburg

In this paper we use a simulation model of an existing semiconductor fab to study the effects of changes in product mix on fab performance. We observe how shortterm increases in wafer starts of a product influence the cycle time and WIP of this product and of the other products. It is examined how the fab recovers from production surges under different dispatch rules and how fab performance is ...

Why Do Simple Wafer Fab Models Fail in Certain Scenarios?

Previous work has proved that simple simulation models are sufficient for analyzing the behavior of complex wafer fabs in certain scenarios. In this paper, we give an example where the simple model fails to accurately predict cycle times and WIP levels of the complex model. To determine the reason for this behavior, we analyze the correlation properties of a MIMAC full fab model and the corresp...

Comparison of Dispatching Rules for Semicondutor Manufacturing Using Large Facility Models

In this paper, we present a comparison of five dispatching rules that aim to reduce the mean and the variance of cycle times. The performance of the dispatch rules is evaluated using simulation results for two large semiconductor wafer fabrication facilities. The results show that which dispatch rule achieves the best results depends on the fab, on the load of the fab and on the product.

Analysis of the Instationary Behavior of a Wafer Fab during Product Mix Changes

This paper presents a series of experiments that were conducted to investigate in the instationary behavior of a wafer fab after changes in product mix. The experiments were performed using a simulation model of the front end area of an existing semiconductor fab. We observe how short-term increases in wafer starts of a product influence the cycle time and WIP of this product and of the other p...

Computing Safetime in a Conservative Synchronous Simulation Based on Future Events

In a synchronous, conservative simulation protocol, the logical processes (LP's) execute in super-steps. The number of super-steps is a source of overheads in such a protocol, and depends on the progression of the LPs' safetimes. It is therefore desirable that every LP's safetime progress as far as possible during each super-step. This paper describes how to further relax the safetime computati...
